Coaching is really about teaching. One of my most treasured friends is my coach from 7th grade. I learned a lot from him in 7th grade and still learn from him today. Great coaches teach.

Small Business Coaching Success Story

I got a call last year from a small grocery market in Los Angeles. Now there's a rough business to be in. The competition from the big players is huge. I assumed this was the typical "we aren't making enough sales" call. Was I wrong. This little market market was raking in $400k per month! That's huge for a small, private grocery store.

Problem wasn't sales though getting more sales is always nice. The problem was margin. The store made sales but didn't make money. The owner worked hard to increase sales. And he kept increasing sales but he slid into a very deep debt hole.

He brought me in to look at the store. That was a good idea. I needed to see the place. Immediately I could see that his problem wasn't sales, it was margin. But how could we raise prices with all the big boys working so hard to drive small store out of business?

It wasn't easy and it took a few months but we did it. It wasn't easy because we had to be smart and creative. We couldn't just raise prices, that would be suicide. And we didn't have a big pot of money to jazz up the store. But we did it.

I started by working with his suppliers. I got the debt pressure reduced so the business could function. Then we went to work on building margin. Within 90 days the store was in the black and at the end of six months it was doing very well.
