When they see the perfect wave coming their way, the smart surfer turns to position himself to go in the direction of the wave. In other words, his attitude turns from watching to preparing for the ride.
He then starts paddling. The surfer knows he must be moving at just the right speed when the wave reaches him or it will pass him by. Catching a wave is all about timing.
